Balsamic - Territory

The production area of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI takes place, according to tradition and in compliance with current regulations, in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The grapes that grow here are characterized by the right dose of sugars and acidity.

Flavors and know-how

Modena and Reggio Emilia are located in the plains of Emilia Romagna, along the scenic trail that follows the course of the Po river, and crosses the Secchia and Panaro basins. This is the area corresponding to the ancient Duchy of Este: a land rich in history and with a great culinary tradition. Precisely the ancient know-how of the farmers and the innate love for the good life and good food, together with the soil and climatic characteristics of the area, have allowed us to create a typical and exclusive product such as Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI.

Optimal climatic conditions

Modena and Reggio Emilia are lands with a typical semi-continental climate, mitigated by the influence of the nearby Adriatic Sea. Winters are harsh with average temperatures hovering around 2° C. Summers are hot and humid with temperatures even over 35°C, and Springs and Autumns are decidedly mild. These conditions favor the development activities of the native acetic flora, which has a decisive influence on the maturation and aging process of the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. The Modenese and Reggiano area is also characterized by moderate rainfall (about 750 mm per year) and by the mists, present mainly in late autumn and winter.

Unique product in the world

Precisely because its existence is closely linked to the know-how, traditions and skills of the local populations, Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI is considered for its uniqueness, a symbol of the culture and history of Modena. This was confirmed by the Official Journal of the European Union (L 175/10 of 4.7.2009).
